Le Coup du parapluie starring Bub and Bob

Rainbows retired, Bub and Bob are back, now armed to the teeth with... Mary Poppins prop paraphernalia. Parasol Stars is the arguably better sequel to Taito's arcade coin-op classic hit, Rainbow Islands. You'll struggle to find a baddie dispatch mechanic to rival the satisfaction of unbridled umbrella battery! In close combat situations, it functions as a blunt bludgeoning tool or water droplet propulsion dispenser, whilst with more time to scheme, we can catch individual water droplets, accumulate a super water bomb, then unleash a torrential flood to sweep out the monstrous reprobates barring our progress. Mastery of all combinations of attack in quick succession enriches the challenge with an ingenious strategy element rarely seen in arcade-action games.

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got, I'm still, I'm still Moley with a Glock

Gremlin's fifth Monty Mole jaunt signalled the humble, furry miner's transition to the 16-bit systems in 1990 as well as smooth scrolling platforming. A fluttering cape can work wonders for one's superpowers, evolving our dirt-munching workhorse into a Rick Dangerous style Impossamole, ready to burst loose, kung-fu-kicking from his 8-bit shackles equipped with smart bombs and a gun, fearlessly prepped to explore the far reaches of the planet.

Water bombs at dawn

Can you assist Hipopo the Hippopotamus in tracking down his misplaced girlfriend? Come on, it's a Taito, coin-op, 2D platformer, it'll be fun. Especially since you get to pelt water bombs at enemies, use them to drive water wheels, insta-grow climbable beanstalks, and freeze then kick assailants off-screen!

Originally released to arcades in 1990, Ocean UK never got round to pulling the trigger on Ocean France's water pistol, shooting their exquisitely polished Amiga conversion into a software retail shop near you. It wasn't until 2003 when it was finally (and freely) distributed online for Amiga fans to discover what might have been. Well, actually is. Now anyway. You know what I mean.

No Turrican is an island

Very little concerning Factor 5's beloved Turrican series is actually original. Its a melangey, hotchpotch of mishmashy jambalaya, borrowing bits and pieces of pop-culture from here, there and everywhere. Their derivative DNA in no way detracts from the works of art that constitute at least the first two entries in the sextet. On the contrary, aside from being rock-solid, brain-mashing fiends that only a pro-gamer could beat, they sail extremely close to judgement as exemplars of pixely perfection. That said, it's immensely good fun to dissect each Turrican in the franchise, drawing parallels between the sundry mediums where they cross paths.
