Played 'til my fingers bled, it was the summer of '92

Ocean Software's multi-system Addams Family licensed movie tie-in platformer quite possibly represents the most successful attempt in history to produce a fun, responsively controlled and engaging Mario clone for non-Nintendo systems. It's hard to overstate how big a deal it was to snare that particular pot of gold at the end of the rainbow from the moment the stubby, bland plumber brothers emerged from their Japanese u-bend. That Addams Family capitalises on the cache of the massively popular supernatural black comedy of the same name was the final nail in the coffin. Note that this is a positive metaphor in this context, as is catching a guillotine blade with your forehead, literally.

Gomez and his kidnapped clan are cute, charismatic and well worth the supreme effort required to rescue them from a towering, screen-sized Judge Womack. Not a difficult game by any stretch, yet there's a hell of a lot of it, and due to the puzzle-platform nature of our mission it's not possible to speed through the mansion Sonic-style. No bad thing - Sonic is vastly overrated too. Boasting beautifully crafted pixel art, atmospherically eerie, yet playful music, and perfectly balanced gameplay mechanics, Addams Family has to be right up there in the top two best platformers for the Amiga.
