A boy's best friend

Hollywood horror and the slasher genre, in particular, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Psycho (the proper 1960 black and white original obviously). It's an undeniable, 40,000-carat gold, timeless, bona fide classic. So how could you possibly treat it with suitably decorous gushing reverence in gaming form? You can't! Simple as that. Starsoft Development Labs gave it a shot regardless, translating Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece into a primitive adventure-puzzle game controlled by a simple hot-key verb interface. Before you get too excited, be aware that you won't be playing as everyone's favourite bell boy, the mesmerisingly jittery, double-thinking Norman Bates. Instead, the starring protagonist is an anonymous detective who visits Bates' motel in order to investigate the theft of some jewels... along with their bound and gagged curator.

True, it's not exactly like holding a mirror up to the silver screen, yet there are enough intriguing allusions to the movie to make it fun, charming and surprisingly eerie. It wouldn't be worth a carrot without the movie license attached. Apply a liberal dollop of imagination, play by candlelight under a full moon, wearing your mother's wedding dress and you might just enjoy it. It worked for me.
