Tormented by a ferocious storm, traumatophobe, Macauley Culkin, takes shelter in an eerie, mysterious library while out on an errand to the hardware store. There he meets a creepy librarian played by Christopher Lloyd who turns out to be the Pagemaster Mac encounters once transformed into a cartoon, whisked off to a fantasy land hatched from the fragments of classic fiction. Three thematically personified, anthropomorphic books aid the terrified whipper-snapper in his odyssey in search of the elusive green neon exit, teaching him some valuable lessons concerning bravery and fear en route.
A 2D, scrolling, action-platformer was released in conjunction with the movie in 1994. A trio of incarnations comprising the same design appeared for the Game Boy, SEGA Genesis, and SNES courtesy of Probe Entertainment. Channelling Richard Tyler, we traverse playfields embodying the three genres of popular fiction represented by Macauley's pulp pals in the movie. Most are explored on foot, others on a magic carpet, though none involve an armoured BMX.
